What Is EMG + NCV (Lower Limb)?

Electromyography (EMG) and Nerve Conduction Velocity (NCV) are diagnostic procedures used together to assess the health of nerves and muscles—particularly valuable when investigating symptoms like numbness, tingling, or weakness in the lower limbs.

  • EMG: Involves inserting a fine needle electrode into muscles. It records electrical activity both at rest and during contraction, helping detect abnormalities such as muscle disorders or nerve dysfunction.

  • NCV: Surface electrodes are placed on the skin along a nerve’s path. A mild electrical impulse is sent, and the response is measured to determine how fast and strongly the nerve conducts signals.

Together, these tests help neurologists diagnose conditions like peripheral neuropathy, sciatica, radiculopathy, and muscle disorders.

Normal values for NCV typically hover around 50 to 60 meters per second—values outside this range may suggest nerve or muscle pathology.

Procedure timeline:

  • Total duration typically ranges from 30 to 60 minutes, depending on how many nerves/muscles are tested.

  • Results are usually available within 12 to 24 hours post-test.

Preparation and risks:

  • Avoid lotions or moisturizers before the test.

  • Wear loose clothing and inform your doctor if you have implants like a pacemaker.

  • The process may cause minor discomfort (e.g., needle prick or tingling), but risks are minimal.
